CIEE Alumni Spotlight: Arnaud Collery - Chief Happiness Officer and Entrepreneur

“Creativity goes through the roof when studying overseas!”

This week, we wanted to highlight the innovative career and projects of Arnaud Collery, who studied at the CIEE Study Center in Tokyo in 1992. Arnaud, who hails from Paris, decided to study in Tokyo after leaving a program at the American Business School in Paris. During his year of study at Waseda University, Arnaud lived with three different Japanese host families in three different neighborhoods in Tokyo. In each one he felt treated as a son, and discovered the beauty of having a host family integrate you into their home life.

"The culture is so different [from France]…that’s what I love about it. To be confronted with a different culture is one of the best things I have done in my life"

Since his life-changing year in Tokyo, Arnaud has pursued his passions and driven innovation throughout his career and across various industries. He has performed as a stand-up comedian, an actor in LA, directed films, and hosted TV shows and countless events across the world. He has also worked with finance and tech startups in various marketing roles, which has allowed him to return to Japan several times over the last two decades.

Arnaud was also chosen to be an Entrepreneur in Residence for the first tech accelerator in Africa, created in partnership with Google for Entrepreneurs in early 2013. He has mentored many start -ups and has hosted tech events such as He is also on the Board of Advisors for the Africa Angels Network.

Most recently, Arnaud co-founded the Kikai Mining Happiness Agency. As the Chief Happiness Officer, Arnaud has co-developed a powerful event series called Stand Up for Passion, which brings seven speakers together to inspire and provide insight into the deep passion of tech entrepreneurs and creative professionals with a public audience. In July 2014, Arnaud and his colleagues held a successful event at the French Consulate in NYC. His firm is also holding a Happy Hacking Days technology hackathon in Lille, France in September 2014.
