CIEE Alumni Meet at Eataly Chicago

The CIEE Alumni Chicago Chapter held its first event under leadership of the new chapter president, Lauren Swanson. The happy hour event was an opportunity for CIEE alumni in Chicago and nearby suburbs to meet for an evening of networking, discussion, and food. Lauren reports:

"We gathered at Eataly Chicago's La Piazza on Friday, Nov. 11 for pizza, wine, and networking. Located in the heart of the second floor, La Piazza is modeled after a jovial Italian city square, where friends and families gather every day for shared plates and drinks. Alumni and guests came by after work to mingle and discuss their study abroad experience, other trips they've taken since going abroad, and more. There was such a diverse mix of what our alumni were up to, and it was great to see everyone getting to know each other. Everyone who attended were first-time chapter event attendees and we all became Facebook friends instantly. Everyone planned to attend another chapter event soon. Happy hour was a definite success!"

Politics and Picnics in Washington, D.C. with CIEE Alumni

Last weekend, the CIEE Alumni Washington, D.C. Chapter organized a second annual picnic to bring together alumni in the area for good food and conversation. Chapter leaders report:

"Although the week was quite cold, this year's picnic fell on a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon. CIEE alumni and guests gathered by the Lincoln Memorial to enjoy great company, music, and conversations about the upcoming election. Most importantly, we got to catch up with each other since the last networking event in July. It was a wonderful day to be out enjoying the fall season while sharing delicious picnic treats. Most CIEE alumni in attendance were participants of study abroad programs, while one participant was from the CIEE Teach Abroad program in Spain. Alumni also talked about planning the upcoming holiday party in early December. Keep your eye on the Alumni Events page and our Facebook group for an announcement soon!"

CIEE Alumni New York City Chapter Welcomes New Leaders & Alumni

Recently, we checked in with the CIEE Alumni New York City Chapter leaders to hear about their happy hour event last month. Here’s what they had to say:

“We gathered at B Bar and Grill to welcome our new team members, Ibtida and Olivia, and reconnect before the busy work season begins. Alumni from study abroad and teach abroad were in attendance, and even the father of a program participant came to the event. There was such a diverse mix of what our alumni were up to, and it was great to see everyone hanging out and getting to know each other better. We discussed our experiences abroad, how it’s impacted our lives now, and what we hope to create with the alumni chapter. Happy hour was a hit, and we are looking forward to our next event!”

Event Recap: CIEE Alumni in NYC Mingle with AIC Students at a Summer BBQ

IMAG3124 -edits
On Sunday, June 5th, the CIEE Alumni New York City Chapter gathered for a BBQ in Manhattan’s buzzing East Village neighborhood. New York-based alumni prepared a fun-filled evening with delicious food, games, and drinks, and mingled with the new arrivals and fellow alumni. In the spirit of international exchange, the alumni shared their event with Academic Internship Council (AIC) students from different parts of the world who just arrived in NYC for summer internships.

The Academic Internship Council joined the CIEE family in September 2014 and serves more than 40 U.S. and international universities, establishing academic internship opportunities for students in 12 cities worldwide. AIC offers domestic internships in Boston, New York, and San Francisco and has partnered with CIEE alumni chapters in the past to host events.

Chapter president Thilo Huber says, "As former students who have worked their way to and through the Big Apple, we are keen to share our personal and professional experiences with incoming students. Giving them a warm and proper ‘Welcome to New York’ is our way of living the CIEE spirit." And welcome incoming students they did! AIC students were grateful for the new connections, insider advice about navigating NYC, and the delicious lobster tails.

AIC New York Office Director Anna Krishtal says, “The New York AIC office and the CIEE Alumni New York City Chapter have had a great partnership from day one and we will continue to foster relations among local interns, students, and alumni as one CIEE family. This provides our students access to networking and mentoring opportunities that can help them when starting out in their careers. We are so grateful.”

Event Recap: CIEE Alumni San Francisco Bay Area Chapter Meets for Dinner

The CIEE Alumni San Francisco Bay Area Chapter has had a couple of great events this past year, and more are planned for the near future. The chapter's president, Louisa, tells us about their last event:

On Wednesday, May 26, the CIEE Alumni San Francisco Bay Area Chapter held its second event of the year - a casual meet up and dinner to welcome and catch up with new and current members. Alumni, guests, and a few affiliates from the Academic Internship Council gathered at San Francisco’s Buca di Beppo Italian restaurant - a family-style establishment with some of the most eclectic and animated restaurant décor. It was a perfect setting for our night of storytelling and enjoyable conversation!

To elevate the energy of our dinner to be as lively as the wall decorations, the evening began with everyone writing, on their name tags, the farthest location outside of San Francisco that they’ve traveled to. While waiting for the food to arrive, alumni and guests went around the table and shared some fascinating, wild, and insightful travel tales about the destination indicated on their name tag. There were stories of frightening bullfights stopping traffic on a rural road in Hong Kong, horrendous seasickness from an outrageously crammed Thai ferry sailing in the dead of night, how difference in cultural mannerisms made for hilariously awkward encounters in Norway, and so much more. As the evening progressed, it was great to hear stories exchanged about more travels, professional insights, personal passions, and the love for Bay Area culture. In a family-style restaurant, there was certainly an intimate family atmosphere that was achieved at our CIEE dinner.

To the alumni and guests who attended, thank you for your hospitality and company. We are looking forward to another awesome CIEE alumni event in the Bay Area!

Spending a Day in D.C. with CIEE Alumni

There were still some signs of cherry blossoms on April 2nd when the CIEE Alumni Washington D.C. Chapter had their day-long event. Alumni met up at the Newseum for three hours of learning and exploring together. If you've ever been to the Newseum before, you'd know that you could spend much longer than three hours there! Our Alumni Engagement Coordinator journeyed from CIEE Headquarters in Portland, Maine to spend a day getting to know some of our awesome D.C.-based alumni.

The day started off with a brief 4D movie experience in the museum before alumni enjoyed looking at preserved newspapers from the 1800s, innovative media exhibits, and a live interview with Kelly McEvers, co-host of NPR's "All Things Considered." (Click here to listen to the interview that CIEE alumni watched live!)

After the museum, several more alumni joined the group for a walk to the Tidal Basin, where there were many tulips and a few cherry blossom trees still in bloom. To re-fuel after walking all around D.C., everyone had dinner together and shared stories about their CIEE program experiences — what a great way to reconnect with old friends and make new ones!

D.C. Chapter's February Brunch

At the end of February, members of the CIEE Alumni Washington D.C. Chapter met for brunch--their first event of the new year--which also served as a chapter meeting. Members met at Tonic, a popular D.C. brunch spot, to discuss what events they'd like to plan for the year and to eat some delicious food. Check out these great photos from the event!

NYC Chapter's January Meeting

At the end of January, the CIEE Alumni New York City Chapter held a successful meeting at the Centre for Social Innovation in Manhattan. New York-based alumni met for an evening of networking and discussed potential chapter activities for the upcoming year over food and drinks. Chapter president Thilo Huber shares the main discussion outcomes from the meeting:

"We learned from the discussions that people's main motivation to get involved in the chapter is getting to know fellow CIEE alumni, but also staying connected with CIEE as an organization and seeking career networking opportunities."

The chapter leadership has said that they will make those motivations their priorities for the coming year. They will work with chapter members to plan specific events that allow alumni to connect with one another, connect with CIEE, and network for career opportunities. Many great ideas were shared about potential upcoming events, so be sure to stay connected so you don't miss out!
