Before they left, the interns reflected on their experience to share their main takeaways with you. Read all about it.

The U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Lithuania Visits CIEE

CIEE’s Portland Global Entrepreneurship Program, in partnership with the Baltic-American Freedom Foundation, was in full swing this past month with students from Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania joining American students to learn about entrepreneurship in Portland, Maine. Participants are challenged with hands-on curriculum, a case study project with a local minor league baseball team, mentorship from local business owners, and a culminating “Shark Tank”-style business competition judged by a panel of Maine entrepreneurs.

This year the program also welcomed Ambassador Anne Hall, U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Lithuania, to CIEE’s headquarters to hear the students present on their program experience. Ambassador Hall shared her international experience with the students and answered their questions about global entrepreneurship and diplomacy. The participants were inspired by her words, as well as by the many innovative Maine entrepreneurs and business leaders who gave their advice and time to our passionate students. Learn more about the program.

During an art history class, he befriended an Austrian creative with a bold idea to document the culinary wonders of their host city. The result? “Salt & Wonder” – a passionate print magazine exploring the culinary startup culture of Lisbon. They have proudly released their first issue and Thomas continues to serve as the editorial voice for the magazine while back in the United States. Thomas’ study abroad experience is an example of the unique, life-changing opportunities that studying abroad offers to intimately discover a new city, country, and culture. Read Salt & Wonder.

ALUMNI VOICES

Excerpts from recently published alumni stories:

"My job was in a restaurant as a busser. I worked with many international students, and I met my friend Martin from Russia. Every time we finished work we would sit down by the lake and chat. Martin asked me once about my religion, Islam. He had a very negative perception of Muslims because of depictions in the media. I told him that Islam is all about love, peace and compassion, and that we are open to all religions and accept them as they are. My friend apologized to me and told me that he is more eager to know more about Islam and will never believe something without proof anymore. He said he will say proudly that he has a Muslim friend, and that’s something that really touched my heart. -Amir Ammar (CIEE Work & Travel USA, 2016)

"Studying abroad showed me how diverse the world is – in flora and fauna of course, but especially with people. It was building relationships with the people I met abroad, turning strangers to friends, which allowed me to gain perspective I otherwise wouldn't have." -Samantha Farquhar (CIEE Study Abroad, Kralendijk, Bonaire, 2014)

ALUMNI VOICES

Excerpts from recently published alumni stories:

"Well, through the Summit, I recognized a lot of problems in my own society in Afghanistan. Afghanistan contains many ethnicities, and the biggest problem right now is those ethnicities are sometimes fighting with each other. I recognized the problem, and I was so inspired. I think that, like American people, we can also live in peace although we are coming from different ethnicities." -Surosh Esmatullah (CIEE Work & Travel USA, 2014, Civic Leadership Summit fellow)

"In the United States, to me, you can find a huge number of different cultures and people living in the same spot. This is what makes the U.S. so great... My employer was a small example representing the whole. Morey’s Piers was like a small international village. I met not only Americans, but people from all over the world. You don’t have to travel to these places, they are all in Wildwood!" -Ebrahim Sabry (CIEE Work & Travel USA, 2016)

I see how hard they work and how much they sacrifice to succeed. This feeling and the environment pushes me every day to be a better person and never give up on my own dreams." from Expanding Horizons in New York City

"International experience enriches someone who has lived abroad, especially if you are in close contact with the locals and other foreigners. Tasting the culture, enjoying the adventure of something unknown. Then, leaving the place that has been your home for several months or years, you always leave and take something, so at the end your home is everywhere." from Love at Third Sight, Deep in the Heart of Texas

ALUM OF THE MONTH

The Alum of the Month for March is Elviss Straupenieks, CIEE alumnus and former Baltic-American Freedom Foundation (BAFF) participant. This young entrepreneur defied the odds in Latvia to start his company, AirBoard, at age sixteen. For Elviss, participating in the BAFF program was an opportunity to gain experience practicing and understanding the relational aspects of leadership on the path to pursuing his personal and business goals. "Learning how to focus on gaining concrete leadership tools enabled me to create transparency and direction while at the same time involving individuals and groups of people in meaningful dialogues about goals associated with my business,” he says. Coming to Portland, Maine on the BAFF program offered Elviss an opportunity to make connections and gain the leadership skills needed to take his inventive idea one step further. But that’s not where his story begins. Read his story.

CIEE's TEFL Certification Course Helps Alumni with Career Transitions

CIEE’s Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certification courses are offered at a variety of levels online with in-person coursework options to give participants the skills needed to teach abroad. The courses help prepare students for a new life and a new job abroad - teaching English! Tanur Badgley describes how his TEFL course was “my bridge from Topeka to Thailand” and helped him transition from a career in digital media to teaching with success:

“This course has given me the confidence to step into my classroom in Thailand. The practicum gave me first-hand experience with teaching so I could better understand what was to come. [...] Now I'm in Thailand teaching English to 6th grade students and I use the skills I learned from my course every day. I have an awareness of how to build my lessons in a way that brings the learners along with me to eventually create projects using the English skills I taught them. I know many games and have access to many resources to keep English learning exciting. I'm able to blend together my new learnings from the teachers here in Thailand with my understanding of TEFL theory I learned in the course.”

Visit the CIEE TEFL website for more information.

ALUMNI VOICES

Excerpts from recently published alumni stories:

“My Peace Corps experience thus far has been an incredible roller coaster, but overall so worth it and one of the greater experiences of my life." -Anna Poruks (CIEE Study Abroad in Prague, Czech Republic, 2014) Read her story.

"It is only years later, after being immersed in post-graduation life, that I have come to appreciate the lessons I learned and the long-term impact that living in Ghana had on me. [...] Going abroad changes you; no matter where you go or what career you end up pursuing, you will be a better employee, co-worker, and leader for having had to push your boundaries and learn to adapt while abroad." -Hannah Smalley (CIEE Study Abroad in Legon, Ghana, 2011) Read her story.

ALUMNI VOICES

Excerpts from recently published alumni stories:

“…Ubuntu helped us mutually recognize that instead of feeling pity or jealousy among one another, we were just human teenagers who wanted to talk and have fun. It made us realize that as long as we were all willing to recognize, appreciate, and enjoy the common human essence all of us have, our well-being and happiness can flourish.” -Diego Mendoza (CIEE High School Study Abroad in Cape Town, South Africa, 2016) Read his story.

ALUMNI VOICES

Excerpts from recently published alumni stories:

"While applying for the program, I had my doubts about living with a host family, as I had never had any experience like it. What if I didn’t get along with them? What would happen if I couldn’t speak with them because of the language barrier? So many of these thoughts were running through my head and I considered staying in the dorm, but then I had a realization. I wasn’t moving halfway across the world to be in a familiar environment, I was going to put myself out there and try something new. Living with a host family was the answer." - Ria Jagasia, Meeting the Host Family.
